CANARSIE - Police say they have released a suspect in the rape of a 19-year-old Sunday in Canarsie after witnesses did not pick him out of a lineup.

An unidentified black man in his 20s allegedly forced the teen into an alley on Rockaway Parkway at gunpoint before sexually assaulting her, according to officials.

The suspect was wearing a white tank top and blue Hawaiian shorts.

Surveillance video from a nearby store appears to show a man matching the police description of the suspect walking in the neighborhood moments before the attack.

A police source tells News 12 that the person of interest is a Canarsie resident. Community activists have called for increased police presence in the neighborhood to deter crime.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
