BEDFORD-STUYVESANT - A swaying church steeple in Bedford-Stuyvesant forced the Department of Buildings to vacate the area in fear of falling debris.

The steeple is part of Christ Fellowship Baptist Church on Sumpter Street. Neighbors say they saw and heard the steeple moving during strong gusts of wind.

Police blocked off the road Monday morning as a precaution. According to the Department of Buildings website, a full vacate order was issued because the tower’s base was in danger of collapsing.

Church officials would only tell News 12 that they noticed the problem last night.

Police say the evacuation has since been lifted, but the road closure will remain until further notice.
