NEW YORK - The Taxi and Limousine Commissioner (TLC) and Mayor Michael Bloomberg have launched a yearlong pilot program testing out electric cars in its fleet of more than 13,000 yellow cabs.

The eco-friendly Nissan vehicles don't run on gas and emit 70 percent less carbon dioxide than regular cars. They will have to be charged, which takes 30 minutes.

Officials say the goal is to have a third of the city's yellow cabs running on battery by 2020.

The new test taxis will hit the streets later this spring.
