BROOKLYN - A teacher in East Flatbush has been arrested after allegedly hitting a student during a fight.

Authorities say a student at the Middle School for Marketing and Legal Studies told police that his teacher smacked him across the face and punched him Monday.

The accused teacher, identified as Sakeem Nelbett, is charged with assault with intent to cause injury and endangering the welfare of a child. Both are misdemeanors.

The Department of Education released a statement saying, "The alleged behavior is reprehensible. Mr. Nelbett has been removed from the classroom, and will remain far away from students and schools."

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
