BROOKLYN - Teachers in Bensonhurst took to the streets today to protest against Mayor Michael Bloomberg's proposed layoffs and budget cuts to education. If the mayor's budget proposal goes through, 6,000 teaching positions would be eliminated citywide. Teachers at the Lafayette Education Campus say they are worried that the layoffs would not only result in bigger class sizes, but also make it more difficult to recruit good teachers in the future. Bloomberg said he understands the teachers' frustrations, but said their anger should be directed at Albany, not the City Hall.

The City Council has to vote on the mayor's budget and the cuts to education before they can go into effect.
