BROOKLYN - Haitian immigrants facing deportation from the U.S. may be eligible to remain in the country for the time being.

Temporary protective status will be offered to those unable to return home after the devastation caused by last week's earthquake.

In order to apply for an extension, proof must be given that the earthquake really is the cause for the extended stay.
