NEW YORK - Transit workers who responded during the Sept. 11 attacks were honored with medals Tuesday evening at a ceremony held by the Transport Workers Union.

About 100 workers were honored for helping people evacuate the World Trade Center and spending weeks at Ground Zero searching for survivors.

Union officials say there are workers who made the ultimate sacrifice after contracting diseases caused by toxic smoke and debris at the site. Some widows and friends of those who have died accepted the medals on their behalf.

Transport Workers Union President John Samuelsen says honoring fellow members is just one step. The union is in the middle of a massive battle with federal and city agencies to get recognition and compensation for those suffering from illnesses and the families of those who died helping others.

The award ceremony was held at TWU's union hall in Downtown Brooklyn.
