BROOKLYN - The renaming of a well-known tunnel that connects Brooklyn to Manhattan is catching many people by surprise.

The Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel was officially renamed the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel in 2010, but in recent weeks, more signs have been popping up to distinguish the change.

Many residents said they were not only unaware of the new name, but also didn't know who Hugh L. Carey is.

Carey was governor of New York from 1975 until 1982. He passed away in 2011.
