Unions press for same-sex marriage in NY

ALBANY - (AP) - New York state's biggest labor unions arepressing for passage of marriage equality legislation this sessionin Albany.

The Public Employees Federation, CSEA, New York United Teachersand four other unions are joining with Empire State Pride AgendaExecutive Director Ross Levi this afternoon at the Capitol to callon the Legislature to pass a same-sex marriage bill.

Many unions in the state have already declared support forsame-sex marriage legislation, including the AFL-CIO, UnitedFederation of Teachers, Communication Workers of America and theTeamsters.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has warned state lawmakersthat they'll be remembered as civil rights obstructionists if theyblock attempts to legalize gay marriage, which is already allowedin Iowa, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut and theDistrict of Columbia.
