BENSONHURST - More than 50 volunteers were out in Bensonhurst today doing their best to clean up the neighborhood.

Assemblyman William Colton (D-47th District) says he organized volunteers for the cleanup day after receiving several complaints of dirty streets.

Volunteers were equipped with shovels, gloves, brooms and garbage bags provided by the Department of Sanitation as they split up into groups and tackled areas, including Kings Highway, Seth Low Park and Bay Parkway.

Colton says he doesn't blame the Sanitation Department for the messy streets.  He says it is residents who are being careless with their trash that are to blame.

The assemblyman says he plans on organizing additional cleanup days in Bensonhurst throughout the year.
