Walk held in Brooklyn against cuts to FDNY

BROOKLYN - The group Latinas Against FDNY Cuts held its annual walk today, rallying against proposed firehouse closures that have been outlined in Mayor Michael Bloomberg's budget. The protesters kicked off the event by holding a rally outside a stationhouse in Sunset Park that has been turned into an EMS station due to cuts. The march then continued to 61st Street and 5th Avenue, where a building fire left several families homeless. The group then moved to the site of a five-alarm fire in Park Slope that ravaged a supermarket and an apartment building. The walk comes a day after Mayor Bloomberg suggested more cutbacks to the FDNY.The members of Latinas Against FDNY Cuts say with more firehouses on the chopping block, fires will only become more frequent. Organizers of the walk say they have a full slate of firehouses they will be stopping by and rallying at. Their last stop will be at the Greenpoint Terminal Market, the site of a 10-alarm fire that destroyed 15 warehouses five years ago.
