West Indian parade fetes Caribbean culture in Brooklyn

NEW YORK - (AP) - It's a holiday twice over for New Yorkers andothers with ties to the Caribbean.

Labor Day also is the day for the annual West Indian AmericanDay Carnival. The Brooklyn parade is is one of the largest in thecity.

The event is modeled on traditional pre-Lenten Carnivalfestivities. It generally features elaborate costumes, miles offood stalls, reggae beats, colorful floats - and plenty ofpoliticians kicking off the fall campaign season.
