BROOKLYN - A wheelchair-bound Brooklyn man is pleading with the city to keep a ramp in his apartment building after the Department of Buildings (DOB) said it is not up to code.

According to Asraff Ali, the ramp is his only means of getting into his home each day. However, the city says there is no permit for the ramp and it violates building codes for being less than 36 inches wide.

News 12 Brooklyn measured the ramp and found that it is 3-feet wide. Ali also says the landlord has kept the ramp well-maintained for nearly 20 years.

The DOB says the building owner must either get a permit or tear the ramp down. The owner has racked up $8,000 in fines so far.
