Woman rescued from garbage chute in Flatbush

BROOKLYN - EMS workers rescued a woman from a garbage chute on the fifth floor of a state hospital building at 440 Lenox Rd. yesterday.

Police believe June Mathews got into the chute feet first on the sixth floor, but by the time officers got to her, she was below the fifth-floor chute door. Workers say they were able to secure Matthews in one place from the fourth floor and broke into two cement walls to get her out.

Matthews was taken to Kings County Hospital and is in stable condition. Firefighters say she didn't provide answers when they asked why she got into the chute or how she got in.
