Woman sentenced to 20 years in toddler's death

BROOKLYN - A Brooklyn woman was sentenced to 20 years in prison Wednesday in the beating death of a 3-year-old boy.

Kyle Smith died in 2008 after being beaten with a hair brush in Bedford-Stuyvesant. The 20-year sentence is part of a plea by Nymeen Cheatham, the child's godmother, to have charges against her reduced to manslaughter in the second degree.

Cheatham agreed to the plea deal to avoid a trial. Her boyfriend, Lemar Martin, is also charged in the child's death. His trial begins Monday.
