Woman slain outside childhood home

BROOKLYN - (AP) - Police and relatives say a former companion ofex-NBA All-Star World B. Free has been shot to death whileintervening in a fight outside her family's Brooklyn home.

Audrey Johnson was shot Sunday night while visiting from NewJersey. Police and relatives said Johnson was trying to protect herniece's boyfriend from an attack.

The Philadelphia 76ers' owner, Comcast-Spectacor, issued a statement saying Free, who is now part of the team's front office, had "a relationship many years ago" with the victim but theywere never married.

Free starred for several NBA teams, including the 76ers, during a 13-year pro career.
