BAY RIDGE - Women hit the pavement in Bay Ridge Sunday during the eighth annual walk for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

According to statistics, about four million American women are assaulted yearly in what is often a silent crime because victims are too scared to speak out. Organizers say they want to lower that number. They urge women to seek help through groups like Safe Horizon and Women Against Violence.

President George Bush recently signed the Violence Against Women Act, which allocates $3 billion to domestic violence services and prevention.
