BROOKLYN - Brooklyn residents are sounding off about new revelations regarding Democratic candidate for mayor Bill de Blasio.
According to a New York Times report, de Blasio became a fan of Nicaragua's Sandinista party while studying Latin American politics at Columbia. At the time, the Reagan administration denounced the party, calling it tyrannical and communist. The Times also reports that de Blasio honeymooned in Cuba in violation of the U.S. travel ban.
“I don't know if you can necessarily hold someone responsible for views they had 20 years ago. My views have certainly evolved and changed in that amount of time,” said one Brooklyn resident.

Republican mayoral candidate Joe Lhota released a statement saying de Blasio needs to explain himself.
"I’m a progressive Democrat, I’m proud to be,” said de Blasio in response to the Times’ claims. “I’ve worked on issues of inequality my whole life. I’m proud of the work I did related to Central America."
