Many residents said using a smartphone could make paying for transit much easier.

BROOKLYN - The MTA says it is considering phasing out the current MetroCard system.

The MTA says it will decide on a new payment system design this year that will take effect by 2016 or early 2017.

News 12 Brooklyn spoke to residents about what they hope the new system would be like.

Commuters said they thought that the new system could be in the form of a chip, credit card or cellphone application.
