BROOKLYN - The Oxford Dictionary has deemed "selfie" the word of the year.

The dictionary defines it as shorthand for a smartphone self-portrait.

The term "selfie" beat other buzz words, including "twerk" and "Bitcoin."

The words are chosen each year by a research program that monitors online content and collects millions of English words each month.

Some Brooklyn residents told News 12 they weren’t surprised by the choice, given the popularity of the word. Others were not familiar with what a “selfie” was.
