Worker falls 25 feet to his death at Brooklyn Navy Yard

BROOKLYN - A construction worker died after falling down a hole on a tanker ship Tuesday at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, prompting a major rescue effort.

Officials say 36-year-old Arturo Medina fell 25 feet down a 50-foot hole. The hole, which is 16 to 18 inches wide, presented a problem for specially trained firefighters. Hazardous materials crews had to first evaluate the ship, which was used to transport chemicals. Rescue workers say Medina was unconscious and suffered a head injury. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police say they do not suspect foul play.
