Animal shelters in parts of New York City are reaching capacity, and some organizations are asking for help by adopting a furry friend.

Animal Care Centers of NYC says its Brooklyn location was tiptoeing near full optimal capacity last week, which puts a severe strain on resources and space.

The East New York location's manager says the summer is usually a very busy time because a lot of animals have babies. Even now, it says its intake numbers have spilled over into the fall.

The one location has more than 200 cats, dogs, rabbits and birds, which resulted in the center having to use smaller compartments to provide shelter for more of them.

Animal Care Centers of NYC says it had a lot of help from rescue groups and have held several adoption events to try and make it easy and convenient for people to find the rescue animals.

Amid the influx of animals, officials are asking that New Yorkers adopt and not shop. They say adoption fees are cheaper than buying pets, and all animals are spayed, neutered and vaccinated.
