A track star from Bedford-Stuyvesant who fell just short of the Olympics in 2012 credits her family for helping her make it to Rio this year.

Ashley Kelly has been dead set on the 2016 Olympics for the last four years after failing to make the British Virgin Islands Olympic track team in the 2012 games as a senior at the University of Illinois.

Kelly credits her parents for pushing her to achieve her ultimate dream.

"My mom and my dad really took that kind of support system and really pushed me to this goal," she says.

Kelly has spent three days each week on the track leading up to this year's games, even with temperatures reaching the mid-90s.

"My dad tells me every morning when he gets up and he wakes me up to get to practice, 'you gotta do what you gotta do, you're either gonna do it or you're not, you're either gonna make the Olympic team or you're not,' so you just have to put in the work and it works out," she says.
