A bronze statue of Captain America now stands in Prospect Park to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the creation of the comic book superhero.
The 13-foot, 1-ton statue features the quote, "I'm just a kid from Brooklyn," which was taken from the first movie starring Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, 2011's "Captain America: The First Avenger."
News 12 is told the statue's pose was chosen to showcase the hero's strength and form. It was created by Brooklyn-based sculptor Dave Cortes.
"It's such an amazing experience and one that I couldn't dream of on my own when I was asked to do the job," he says.
The day's celebrations also included games and activities testing fans' knowledge of the character.
The widow of Mark Gruenwald, the comic's writer from 1985 to 1996, spread some of her husband's ashes on the statue.
"This is such a great turnout, even in the rain," Gruenwald's daughter says. "Cap has such a long legacy and now he is bronze-clad and will live forever."
The statue will remain in Prospect Park for two weeks before making its way to the Barclays Center until the end of September. It will then be transferred to Sunset Park for the remainder of the year.
