Number of NY jobs edges up in July, unemployment rate steady
(AP) - New York labor officials say the number of private sector jobs in the state edged up to an all-time in July while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.7 percent.

The labor department reported 36,200 new jobs, an increase of 0.5 percent to a total of 7,951,900. It says Thursday that a total of 126,900 have been added statewide since July 2015.

Three small areas - Ithaca, Kingston and Watertown-Fort Drum - showed the most rapid growth during the year, along with New York City and its northern suburbs. Jobs were lost in the Capital Region, Elmira, Binghamton and Syracuse.

The national unemployment rate was 4.9 percent in July.

A payroll survey of 18,000 New York employers is used to generate the jobs numbers.
