Memorial held for 1991 Crown Heights riot victim
Family and friends honored a man Friday who was killed from community violence 25 years ago in Crown Heights.
Yankel Rosenbaum was stabbed and later died in March 1991 when chaos erupted between the black and Jewish communities. The violence that lasted for three days began when 7-year-old Gavin Cato was struck and killed by a Hasidic Jewish driver.
A memorial prayer service was held where Rosenbaum was stabbed. Local Rabbi Shea Hecht says the community has improved since the incident.
"We have telephone calls that are made between each other," he says. "We get together and thank God we have dealt with things very differently than we dealt with them 25 years ago."
Norman Rosenbaum, the victim's brother, says he wants people to remember Yankel as a peacemaker and to honor that day by continuing to work for community unity.
