Bed-Stuy event celebrates women's right to vote
Congress 96 years ago ratified the 19th Amendment guaranteeing American citizens - regardless of gender - the right to vote, and women celebrated that landmark Friday in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
The group Women Up Brooklyn organized a walk and rally to honor the ratification of a woman's right to vote. Women of all ages attended the event, which was designed to promote women's activism in elections and everyday life.
The rally began with a walk down Fulton Street from Restoration Plaza and ended at Fulton Park, where public officials spoke to women at the event, seeking to empower those in attendance about voter registration and improving the lives of women in the community.
This was the first year that Women Up organized the event. Due to its success, organizers say they plan to continue it next year.
