Kids around Brooklyn head back to school
Kids in Brooklyn were back in class Thursday for the beginning of the school year.
Student Chyna Huerta got an extra surprise on her first day of school. Mayor Bill de Blasio, his wife Chirlane McCray and Chancellor Carmen Farina knocked on her front door, ready to walk with her to I.S. 392.
"When I first found out I would be walking with the mayor, I was really scared. I ran into the bathroom and I was practicing, I was practicing really hard," she said.
An estimated 1.1 million children attend classes at city schools, according to the Board of Education.
School in Brooklyn are implementing additional help in their literacy programs. The plan is intended for four districts in the city that are deploying the extra help. Officials say 100 reading teachers have been hired and will be placed among the schools participating in the districts. The new teachers will also help and train other teachers best practices in literacy
