As Americans across the country prepare to honor the lives lost 15 years ago on Sept. 11, a nonprofit organization is continuing its annual tradition of distributing flower bulbs to New Yorkers.
The Daffodil Project started in 2001, when a Dutch man overwhelmed with the news of the Sept. 11 attacks asked to send daffodil bulbs to New Yorkers as a sign of support.
Any New Yorker can pick up the free bulbs as long as they promise to plant it in a public garden.
In the 15 years of the program, more than 6 million daffodils have been planted across New York City.
Organizers say the flower is perfect for public spaces since it can deal well with harsh conditions such as pests and weather.
The flower is meant to be a symbol of strength and resiliency in the wake of Sept. 11.
