Mayor Bill de Blasio and first lady Chirlane McCray called on City Council Wednesday to grant paid leave to victims of domestic violence.

The mayor says that the NYPD gets a call for domestic violence every two minutes.

"Paid safe leave," as it's called, expands on the idea of paid family leave legislation that the city has already passed.

It would allow victims to take paid time off from work, protecting their job and their paycheck while they remove themselves from abusive environments.

Under the legislation, a pro bono lawyer would protect a victim's right to housing. The lawyer would also help remove the accused abuser from the victim's apartment lease, if necessary. It could also get a victim out of a lease without penalty.

The NYPD has announced it will also be pursuing those who violate orders of protection more aggressively under the new Neighborhood Policing Initiative. That initiative will not require victims to fill out a report.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
