Man dies after falling into tank at water treatment plant
A man died Wednesday after falling into a tank at a wastewater treatment plant in Sheepshead Bay.
When firefighters arrived on scene, they were told by Department of Environmental Protection workers that 31-year-old Michael Buffamante had fallen into the water at the sewage treatment plant.
The deputy chief says there was no sign of him on the surface of the water. Eight minutes later, FDNY divers found him at the bottom of the 35-foot-deep tank, pulled him out and performed CPR to try to get a pulse.
The chief says Buffamante was rushed to Coney Island Hospital in critical condition. He later died.
The DEP, which is investigating the incident, says Buffamante was a contractor for the agency who was performing upgrades to the system. He was wearing personal protective equipment while on the job.
The DEP says its thoughts and prayers are with Buffamante's family, friends and colleagues.
