Gowanus Canal watershed gets a makeover
The green infrastructure at the Gowanus Canal watershed, which was about nine years in the making, is complete.
Now elected officials, environmental groups, and city and landscape architects are excited to announce the benefits.
They include the Sponge Park, an 1,800-foot space along the canal's west side designed to absorb contaminants before they enter the water.
Seventy curbside rain gardens are also spread throughout the watershed.
In addition to brightening the neighborhood, the infrastructure will keep the canal clean and also help to purify air in the area.
