Rally held against proposed DOT changes to Ocean Parkway
Community members rallied Sunday in an effort to prevent what they are calling a disastrous traffic change in store for Ocean Parkway commuters.
The group gathered at the corner of Avenue J and Ocean Parkway Sunday to voice concerns over the state Department of Transportation's plan to eliminate right turns from Ocean Parkway onto J and P avenues and Kings Highway. The plan would also eliminate left turns on other avenues by the summer of 2017.
The group says that while it agrees with most of the changes the DOT is making to keep streets safer, the plan would only add more traffic and potential for danger in the heavily congested area
In a statement released by the DOT, a spokesman said that the "DOT is meeting with community leaders on this issue. Safety is our top priority and we look forward to a productive conversation."
A City Hall spokesman also said that they are aware of the work and the safety goals it entails. The spokesperson said that as with any work on New York's roadways, the city DOT will remain vigilant of any impacts.
