The commissioner of the city Administration for Children's Services announced her resignation Monday.
Mayor Bill de Blasio, who accepted Gladys Carrion's resignation shortly after, acknowledged her four-decade tenure in public service.
But the move comes following several high-profile cases of child abuse in the city. One of those involved the death of a 6-year-old Harlem boy, Zymere Perkins.
Investigators say the boyfriend of the boy's mother killed him. The family reportedly had a long history of involvement with ACS.
The ACS, which has a nearly $3 billion annual budget, said it will emphasize the safety and well-being of New York City's children in its search for a new commissioner.
