Dumont Ave. bus accident injures 5, 1 seriously

A school bus accident near Dumont Avenue and Hemlock Street injured at least five people Thursday afternoon, according to authorities.

One person is in serious condition with injuries that are not considered life-threatening, according to fire officials. Four other people, including the bus driver and bus matron, were sent to Brookdale Hospital with minor injuries.

Witnesses say they heard loud crashes and saw a Lexus coming down Hemlock Street strike the bus.

Police say the bus was carrying three children, who were not hurt. After the first collision, the bus tipped over and fell on another car.

The driver of one vehicle remained at the scene and refused medical assistance, police say, but witnesses say they saw a woman and a young boy from one of the cars loaded into an ambulance.
