Shop owner urges working together for Kwanzaa
A Park Slope gift shop is gearing up for next week's Kwanzaa celebration by giving away some of the items he sells.
"We sell the Kinara, the candles, everything you need to celebrate your Kwanzaa," says shop owner Tabeel Rush.
The holiday is a weeklong celebration of African values, focusing on a different principle each day.
For one of those values, Ujima, Rush is giving away a free candle to anyone who celebrates the holiday. Ujima represents collective work, Rush says.
"If I give you a candle, the candle can't light, you can't see the glow, you can't smell the candle, unless you have a match," Rush explains. "So the two things have to work together to achieve a common purpose."
