Family embarrassed by police raid shared on social media
A Brownsville family was awoken to guns and flashlights pointed at their faces, and an embarrassing picture of them was shared on social media.
Kimberly Santiago says the NYPD executed a search warrant early Thursday morning in her Tilden Houses apartment. Police did not find the man for whom they were looking. Santiago wound up being fined for marijuana possession.
While authorities were conducting the raid, the family was handcuffed in the living room. One of the officers involved apparently took a picture on image- and video-sharing app Snapchat. One of the officer's followers recognized Santiago and brought it to her attention.
In one image showing the handcuffed family, the officer's caption of "Merry Christmas its [sic] NYPD!" could be seen.
Santiago says the raid left her apartment ransacked, with multiple doors damaged and a broken television.
The NYPD says the matter has been referred to internal affairs.
