BK family mourns city's 1st homicide victim of 2017

A Cypress Hills family is in mourning after a shooting early Monday in Queens marked New York City's first homicide of 2017.

NYPD officers responded to an assault on 124th Street in Queens around 3:30 a.m. Upon arrival, they found 31-year-old Rocky Kalisaran with gunshot wounds to the chest and his 24-year-old brother, Sunny Kalisaran, with gunshot wounds to the back.

Both men were taken to Jamaica Hospital. Rocky was pronounced dead, and Sunny was in stable condition.

Family members tell News 12 that the brothers went out to a bar near the scene of the incident. Sunny left the bar to retrieve his phone from the car they drove in and was attacked by two men who attempted to take a chain he was wearing. They say Rocky attempted to break up the altercation and was shot.

Rocky lived in Guyana and came to Brooklyn on Saturday to attend his grandmother's funeral.

No arrests have been made.
