2 men killed in separate police-involved shootings

Separate police-involved shootings left two men dead several hours apart on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, authorities say.

Investigators say two plainclothes officers shot 18-year-old Joshua Martino, who they saw firing a gun into the B-Hive Lounge in Crown Heights around 3:40 a.m. Wednesday. Police recovered a .38-caliber revolver at the scene, and Martino died at Brooklyn Hospital.

Police also shot and killed James Owens, 63, around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, at 967 East 99th St. in Canarsie. They say he was carrying a large kitchen knife and refused to put it down despite commands to do so.

Police say Owens advanced toward the officers, one of whom used a stun gun on him. But the device's contacts missed Owens's skin, preventing it from shocking him, and police say a second officer shot him.

He was taken to Brookdale Hospital and pronounced dead.

No officers were injured.
