Hugh Carey Tunnel lane closures expected for weeks

The Hugh L. Carey Tunnel is getting a facelift to support the new cashless tolling system.

The work will impact drivers heading north as lanes shut down to allow the removal of defunct toll booths. Work is expected to continue until the end of the month.

Demolition begins at 8 p.m. and will move from left to right, facing Manhattan.

The toll booths and islands will each be removed and the roadway will get a new surface where they stood.

Once the work is out of the way, the cashless tolling system should shorten commute times, according to officials.
