FDNY: Highest cause of fire deaths in 2016 was electrical

The FDNY says electrical problems caused the most fire-related deaths in 2016.

According to the department's statistics, 14 of the 48 fire-related deaths in New York City last year were due to electrical issues, and power strips and extension cords accounted for nine deaths.

News 12 spoke with the owner of an electrical supply company in the Bronx. Michael Rizzo, owner of Castle Hill Electrical Supply, says a big mistake is overloading an outlet by plugging in too many devices.

The FDNY adds that many power strips are not approved by the UL, a safety consulting and certification company.
