Free app helps connect people to qualifying benefits

A Brooklyn woman has created a free app to help connect people with qualifying benefits.

Melanie Lavelle, founder of Benefit Kitchen, says the app and website allows people to find out what benefits they qualify for.

It takes app users about 20 minutes to fill out questions about how much money they spend on things like food and whether or not they have health insurance.

An algorithm calculates benefits users can take advantage of, ranging from food stamps and tax credits to health care.

Lavelle says the program is safe and anonymous.

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams says tens of billions of dollars are unclaimed every year in federal, state and local benefits.
