Volunteers help immigrants take steps toward citizenship
Dozens of volunteers were in Prospect-Lefferts Garden Saturday to help those seeking U.S. citizenship.
Immigrants waited in line to start the process and take steps toward becoming citizens with the help of coordinators, lawyers and volunteers with the group Citizenship Now!
The CUNY program provides free services to permanent residents throughout the city.
Organizers say they serve hundreds every month at different locations throughout the borough.
In a changing political landscape, the program organizers say they have seen a surge in interest over the past year. They say they don't want potential citizens to be fearful, but to act fast, since it is unclear what the new administration will bring to the fight over illegal immigration.
