New detox center to open in Sunset Park in March

A new detox center is set to open in Sunset Park in March, and health officials say it comes at a time when opioid use is rising in New York City.

Resource Beacon of Hope director Ann Marie Perrotto lost her son to drugs and says she wants to make sure others get the care her son didn't.

"You're here to be cared for, you're here to be loved," she says. "You're here to be listened to. We are here to understand you."

Officials call the rise in opioid use a public health crisis. Those who work at the new detox center say it is step one in the goal of being drug-free.

"The idea is to have appropriate services out there: treatment, prevention and recovery services to fight this epidemic, and that's what we're doing," says New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Commissioner Arlene González-Sánchez.
