Rally supports student blocked from returning to Brooklyn

Demonstrators gathered at Cadman Plaza Monday afternoon to support a CUNY student from Iran who is now blocked from re-entering the U.S. despite having a student visa.

City officials and students outside the Brooklyn Federal Courthouse demanded that Saira Rafiee be allowed to return to the states. Rafiee is a CUNY Ph.D. student who was returning to the U.S. after visiting her family in Iran on Thursday.

Thursday is also when President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning Iranians and people from six other Muslim-majority countries from entering the states.

CUNY students say the ban stands against America's values.

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams says he wants all educational institutions to step up to support students who may be affected by the executive order.
