Woman dead after 85-year-old driver backs onto sidewalk

A man backed his car onto the sidewalk Monday outside a grocery store in Coney Island, killing a woman and injuring two other people.

Police say an 85-year-old man tried reversing his car into a parking spot on Brighton Beach Avenue, but wound up mounting the curb and hitting three pedestrians. The incident happened around 1 p.m.

A 67-year-old woman was killed. The owner of the grocery store says she was a customer.

The other two pedestrians, a 33-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman, were transported to Lutheran Hospital in stable condition.

The driver stayed on scene. No charges have been filed at this time.
