Police search for men impersonating officers, robbing victims

Officials are searching for two suspects who they say impersonated police officers and robbed at least three people.

Police say one incident that was captured on surveillance video occurred in Gravesend in December. They say a 16-year-old was approached by two men outside a home. The teen says the men displayed a shield and said they were officers before handcuffing him, taking his cellphone and throwing it into the sewer before fleeing the scene.

Officials say a similar incident happened on Jan. 2 on East 40th Street and then again on Jan. 4 at the intersection of East 23rd and Avenue W. In one of the cases, the suspect stole a man's cellphone and wallet.

Police say they're searching for two black men around 25 years old. They believe one of them may drive a black Nissan Altima.

Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-877-577-TIPS.
