Dumbo bakery owner, artist create mural to build unity

A local bakery owner is using his storefront as a mural to promote unity and love.

Edward Mafoud is the owner of Damascus Bakery in Dumbo. He grew up around Brooklyn, and as tensions over immigration run high, he says the answer is in this piece of artwork.

The mural was painted in a bright red, with the word love painted 11 times in a spiral by Dumbo-based painter Tara Dixon.

The artist says a spiral is an ancient symbol meaning wisdom. She wants passers-by to know love is enduring, present and infinite.

The mural was painted in just one day last week, as Dixon says it simply couldn't wait.

"The earth is crying out for it, the people are crying out for it and we have the ability to love one another. Let's look for the good in everyone," she says.
