NYPD Mounted Unit works to keep Brooklyn safe
The NYPD Mounted Unit allows the department's officers to keep residents safe while maintaining a different perspective.
Ten horses occupy the unit's stable in Coney Island, and officers say they build a special relationship with their horses. Trust is one of the primary factors; a calm officer is a calm horse.
Their job is to help regulate traffic, control crowds, help prevent crime and keep a good relationship with the communities they serve.
After an officer is chosen for the Mounted Unit program, they go through a rigorous training process. Officers say they still learn each day from their horse and the community.
