NYPD kills teen suspect in East New York shootout
NYPD officers from the 75th Precinct Anti-Crime Unit shot and killed a 17-year-old boy during a shootout in East New York Thursday.
Police say Kadeem Torres was fleeing plainclothes officers near Fountain and Blake avenues around 4 p.m., when he drew a gun and fired.
Police chased him to 890 Belmont Ave., returned fire and killed him in the backyard.
Neighbors who overheard the gunfire say they feared for their families.
"Pop! Pop! Pop!" recounts Adrian John. "I have three kids, two babies and an 8-year-old, and the first thing I did was take them and drop them to the floor."
The officers were in the area investigating a retaliatory attack connected to a recent gang-related shooting.
Torres's mother told News 12 that he was one of five brothers. She claimed that he had no prior criminal history, but police sources say he had multiple prior arrests.
Police say they recovered a revolver at the scene. No officers were injured.
